Got a great and rational response from McyDs. Summary: local managers make local decisions. Here's the full text . . .
"Thank you for contacting McDonald's about the environment. Like you, we care about the environment and are always looking for ways to preserve it.
We're committed to recycling and source reduction in every aspect of our operations. We encourage our local restaurants to become involved in community recycling efforts and to recycle as much solid waste as possible. In fact, many McDonald's restaurants have separate bins for recycling customer waste, depending on the availability of local recycling facilities. The final decision to recycle at the local level is made by the management of each McDonald's restaurant. Therefore, you may want to ask your local McDonald's managers what types of programs are in place and how you can participate."
