We have a fairly clean household, but keeping the oven in check has never been something I do! I knew I had to take charge though when my daughter asked what was for dinner, sniffed the air, and claimed that she already knew: it was the oven preheating! UGH - now I HAD to get the oven cleaned.
So, I pulled out my handy books from Heinz that talk about the many uses of salt, vinegar, and baking soda and found that I could indeed put away the oven cleaner that contained lye and needed to be used with extra long gloves!
Step 1: I left a cup of alcohol in the COLD oven overnight.
Step 2: Wiped it out (well, it took some good scrubbing, but hopefully, you can tell from above how NASTY my oven was) by scouring with dry baking soda and a wire pad.
Step 3: Rinsed with water.
Step 4: Wiped down with mix 1/2 water and 1/2 vinegar. (This, I was told, will help with buildup - yet to be seen as I just did this yesterday.)
Voila! My oven really sparkles. I'd have to say given all that build up, it would have taken as long with a commercial cleaner - it really did work great!
