This time of year in NC, dogwood blossoms grace tree limbs and forsythia lights the landscape with its yellow flowers. With all of the spring beauty afoot, we have decided to tackle growing our own veggies this year. A great choice since we'd started to compost last year, right? Well, here's part one of our produce adventure.
Our first step was to fi
gure out where to grow the veggies. I patted myself quite proudly on the back as I thought to re-use and old sandbox to create a raised bed. You can see that's worked out reasonably well. (The plan was to start small anyhow and see how it goes, so this suffices!)
Now, to fill it up with dirt and prepare it for planting. My husband and son braved the weight and stink of the compost to create a greener Earth for all. Enter, problem number one: apparently, we're not composting quite right. Not only can you see that it hasn't entirely broken down, we're GROWING THINGS. I've started a couple of irises, which I'm sure will be lovely, but have no place in my veggie garden. And, we've got a great start on sweet potatoes!
Ah well, on to learn more about composting and figure out how to get this mess ready to plant a few things this year :)
